Machmir on bal tashchis, you mean.

No, bal tashchis is an unlucky halacha. Better to be machmir in ways that show everyone how machmir you are.

Yesterday at shul a friend said that she thinks the contemporary challah rituals originated with the techina that was composed to be said when taking challah and so originally was about prayer, not magic, and sees it positively as long as people remember that God doesn't work for us.

Why was the guy carrying a piece of afikomen with him?

To deal with situations like this?   But then there would already have to be an idea that a piece of afikoman is a segulah.  Unless there are segulah empiricists who try everything, and maybe if this one didn't work they would have tied a worn-out tzitzit thread around someone's pinky or smeared some congealed olive oil left in the menorah after Chanukah on the duty-free catalog.
