ppl complain that the obligations process of assessing shul dues is humiliating.

What about an honor system of telling people the expectation is 1.5% of family income (in canada your line 150 on your income tax return).

Or there could be no "assessment" at all and everyone pays the same amount (with dispensation for the destitute of Thornhill).....

I saw someone reading a scholarly paper on d'vekut in shul and asked him how much mystical union dues are.

Then what happens when the shul needs more money?  Should there be an additional assessment every time this happens? A call for donations?

Well I guess there are a few ways to go (numbers are illustrative only):

Assess everyone for a .25% supertax
Assess everyone above $150k a .25% supertax
Ask everyone for additional donations
Ask key machers for additional donations
Have a fundraising dinner with Mayim Bialik as keynote
Have a sisterhood-brotherhood event selling sex toys with all proceeds towards replacing the shul's HVAC system
