Investigators say 24-year-old Julianna Talevski is the registered owner of the 2006 Ford Fusion seen fleeing the LCBO parking lot at Ellesmere Road and Victoria Park Avenue after two people were shot to death on April 29.

Police do not know if Talevski was driving her car at time, saying she has only communicated with investigators through her lawyer.

"Innocent people traditionally do not need lawyers," Sgt. Gary Giroux said in a media conference at Toronto Police Headquarters on Friday.

Pardon? Innocent people dont need lawyers and if you think you do you must not be innocent? Seriously???

Our society has (d)evolved to a point where cases are tried in the court of social media long before anything resembling justice is invoked, so it's not so surprising that people should try appeals to emotion and gotcha arguments to advance "their" narrative. It is disturbing that the police would countenance such behavior, though.

That is the traditional perspective of law enforcement, and even prosecutors.  At least, they say it to attempt to manipulate people so they don't have to actually do their jobs.

My firm practices criminal defense (among other things).  One of our standard lines is "silence is how innocent people protect themselves."
