Have you noticed that people drink tomato juice more on planes than anywhere else?

I'll admit that I'm guilty of this.

yes - very common.

It's the sodium. Something to do with flying/pressure etc. I looked it up once because I saw the same thing, but there's definitely a biological reason for craving more salt. Thus nuts. And tomato juice has gobs of sodium. Like near 100% your daily allowance in one can or something.

Makes sense. I also think for many people the craving is indirect, so they don't know they want tomato juice but once they hear half the people around them ordering it just sounds oh-so-good. And so the proportion grows...

I once asked for tomato juice because that's what everyone around me had asked for and it looked kinda good, I took one sip and hated it. What a waste. It was so bitter.

Here is AA's in flight drinks, and AA is nothing special

It also sounds healthy. I could see myself getting it if I was thinking that I hadn't had decent food that day.

It's the altitude. And tomato juice is not the only thing that's better up there.

Okay, but there's a reason for it.

I take it often. But then again, I drink it at home as well. I love tomato juice. Especially with black pepper and lemon/lime.
