Have you been? Which tour manager? How was it?

Any recommendations?

My brother leads tours from time to time (well, he did when he actually could take time off to devote to such things). I have never been, but some of the trips looks really incredible.

I know tons of people who have gone, and they all loved it.

The only criteria they have AFAIK is age and whether you have been on an organized trip to Israel before.

I was told by experienced Birthright'ers to pretend I'm less religious when I get the initiation call. They asked all kinds of questions to try and gauge how much I know about Judaism.

They have different trips for different kinds of demographics, run by different organizations. Including trips for religious people.

I went over 10 years ago with ohr somayach and had a great time, even if it wasn't coed.

The great thing is that they send out yearly surveys to see how Jewish you still are and give $25 amazon.com gift certificates.

Would that be halachically problematic, of they were targeting a specific demographic, to prevent you fit when you don't?

Nope. There were way too many people who applied and they held a raffle. Ironically, someone with my first name was picked and someone with my last name was picked but not me.

i went in 2003 with SEC (sephardi educational center in LA). specifically with them because they left from JFK which was close enough for me to get to, plus it had an orthodox group. it was an amazing, excellent, fantastic trip and i still keep in touch with friends. i highly recommend going if you have the opportunity.

Not birthright, but I was rejected by another trip to Israel group because I was too observant. I took it as a compliment and went looking for better suited groups. :)
